What is Organ Donation?

Organ donation is the donation of organs of the human body or biological tissue from a living or dead person to a living recipient in need of transplantation. Almost anybody can donate their organs. Age is not a restriction when it comes to donation of some organs and tissues. The determining factors are where and how a person dies, and the conditions of their organs and tissues. While your age and medical history will be considered, you shouldn’t assume you’re too young, too old or not healthy enough to become a donor.

What is Jeevandan?

Jeevandan is a Cadaver Transplantation Programme initiated by the government of Telangana. A large number of patients suffering from irreversible organ ailments involving heart, liver, lungs, kidney and bone marrow could lead a healthy life if they had the opportunity to undergo a transplant surgery, and that is what Jeevandan tries to facilitate.

Jeevandan also encourages people to pledge their organs and dispels the myths regarding organ transplantation. You can pledge your organs to Jeevandan by simply clicking.

Each state and the centre may have their own Cadaver Transplantation Programme instituted as well.

Can Anyone Donate An Organ?

Almost anyone of nearly any age and average health can donate an organ. The medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissues can be donated for transplant or scientific research.

One organ donor can save up to eight lives. One eye and tissue donor can save or improve the lives of up to 50 people. This means an organ, eye and tissue donor can potentially impact the lives of 58 people. All of the major religions in this country approve of organ and tissue donation and consider it a gift – an act of charity. A donor can always contact their religious adviser for spiritual guidance.

The only conditions that can prohibit you from donating your organs are:

HIV (in some circumstances people with HIV can donate to another person who already has HIV)

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) Cancer that has spread in the last 12 months
